Nissan LEAF, Steve Jobs and the 4th Generation iPhone

5

Monday was the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, which means Steve Jobs was doing his ‘walk and talk,’ and introduced the next generation iPhone…which is quite possibly the worst kept secret at Apple ever since the whole, oops I lost my prototype iPhone at a bar in Redwood, and now the world knows about it because someone found it and sold it to the Gizmodo tech website, who then broke it down for the world to see.

Of interest, Gizmodo was not a attendee of this event…no surprise there. However, what was a surprise, was that Nissan was there!

In a related matter, do you want to know what Apple’s ‘new hotness’ in the commercialization of your mobile device is is? No? Not really? Thats hard to believe. However, what was debuted as a example of this new product placement system was the Nissan LEAF.

If you have a iPhone already, or other web-enabled mobile device, (or have even ever used youtube.com), you are familiar with the ‘bar of annoyance,’ that little thing at the bottom of your screen that desperately begs you to click it. (You would not believe how many times I have been the 1,000,000th visitor to a site, and subequently have won a prize) Well, the iPhone v4.0 still has this little half inch banner of treasure (now called iAd), but sometimes this nuisance will feature a ad (and a app) from Nissan.

Hit the bar and you get all the latest specs on the car, all of the available features and maybe a EV application or two for your brand spanking new iPhone (well, once it goes live at the end of June that is).

One of the these features is the ability to sign up to Nissan’s reservations page for the LEAF, another is to learn how far a $1 worth of electricity gets you in a LEAF (38 miles), and also to compare that to a $1 worth of gas in other vehicles, like its near twin, the HUMMER H2 (4.8 miles of range)

Personally, I find almost all of these web-enabled, mobile applications and ads completely useless and have almost zero real world use. That being said, I can’t wait to try it out myself.

(Oh yeah, there is also a LEAF giveaway if your into stuff like free cars…something about being the 1,000,000th visitor though I think)

I’d still rather here the details on the next step in the ordering process, but interesting to pass the time.

The iphone … or better yet, the ipad could replace all the expensive electronics that the automanufacturers are putting down the center of the dash these days. (Think $629 for Apple’s constant bleeding edge (with open sourced apps) technology vs. $2,000 + for the automakers stuff that’s out of date in about a year).

I’d like to see RAM come out with a nice ipad car mount complete with an OBDii connection, external gps antenna, and speaker outlet.

    /nav, music, battery management, communications, etc… etc… etc….

  3. Your right, I think this ‘integrated’ content inside your car on the dash has limited value. Almost in the same way Onstar doesn’t have the same value it once did….other than the ‘your in a crash, I’m sending a ambulance,’ all that other turn by turn stuff just seems like a nuisance.

  4. Great write up. The iPhone is truly awesome and I don’t like being without it. This time last year I had jumped in a pool with my iPhone and it was dead. I had to wait 9 days before I was able to buya new one. The phone I had was a cheap go phone. I really love all the apps that can be downloaded to the iPhone. The best part about the iPhone to me is the ability to check emails on the fly. Thanks for the information.

  5. Remind your self of what you wanted to be when you were young. Is it some thing you still need to be? Do you still get all tingly whenever you think about it? This may possibly give you some real clues. And of course, depending on what you wanted to be, that young dream might be out of reach. Or…is it? Just consider it.
