Nissan has released the first TV commercial for the Nissan LEAF featuring famed cyclist Lance Armstrong.

It is a short sweet 37 second commercial emphasizing the fact that the LEAF has no emissions, and is a pleasure to ride behind on a bicycle.

Clean, simple and elegant ad. Nice.
Nissan is showing a deft touch in their advertising.

One does wonder about the wisdom of having TV ads a long time before there are cars available for sale.

Yes, it is nice to have a big order book.

But no, for when there are long delays people lose interest and move on. I think that’s especially true for the so-called “early adopters.” Then when the product does become available, there’s no longer all that much interest. [For example, Nintendo and Wii.]

The commercial is simple and to the point! What other car can claim that you can follow it biking and not be choked to death with exhaust! This is Nissan’s goal. To promote what bad things aren’t in this car! And no hybrid, serial or parallel, can make this claim, of course without lying.. ;-) Lance is probably one of the best choices to help promote this vehicle. Just wait and see how much he’ll help to sell LEAFs!

BTW RB, Wiis were in demand up the the Pacific NW area for 2 Xmas in a row, but maybe not in your area. Checkout the new chargers coming on the Electric I-5…

can’t see it, most video streaming is blocked in my office… but by the description, it emphasize a very important thing, air quality on the streets. I used to ride the bike about 20-30km /day but after a few years I ended with a very nice allergy to smoke, dust and germs and I had to stop riding the bike.

I like the LEAF and am signed up for one. It makes total sense to me to have this car for a daily driver instead of a 16mpg truck.

The thing is (like RB) it makes little sense to advertise something that is sold out for the next two years. Especially this far before launch. People will forget or disregard.

And I have an issue with comparisons to other industries. A Wii is not a car. Totally different things between $32,000 and $200. Cars take a little more thought before purchase (unless $32k is pocket change) :) . An electronic toy is something you buy trivially.

Good point, for certainly the products and prices are quite different. Still, it is a person making the decision to purchase, and people have many of the same kinds of thoughts, emotions, and reactions in both cases. Being strictly rational, one doubts whether either purchase is essential right now, but people will buy both, I’m sure.

I think Nissan is advertising since if they didn’t the general population wouldn’t even know about it. Lots of people have heard of Tesla, BMW, & GM’s EV offering but not as much from Nissan. July 2010 advertising for a September 2010 order confirmation period, with December delivery? I don’t think that 6 months is too far ahead! But with Lance promoting it, should catch on even quicker! He’s got quite the following…

Plus what happens (I know crazy thinking here) if people back out of their deposit/purchase, then Nissan has inventory sitting around. This way it’s a security blanket to make sure that all first years inventory sells out. When the second batch comes in late 2011, then people who have seen the LEAF in action will be jumpin’ at the chance to get one.

If that were the schedule, it would be very sensible, assuming you mean December 2010. Realistically, except perhaps for people in San Diego, delivery is more likely in December 2012 or 2013, as there are only 20K cars in each of the first 2 years.

Don’t know what to say RB. Nissan has said that the initial rollout for WA state is December 2010, maybe January 2011, whatever a months difference, no big deal. The second rollout won’t happen until later next year!

To the degree that advertising is being done in the roll-out states, roughly those on the pacific coast, and that Nissan will be able to deliver cars in those states to people who order now, it makes good sense.

To the degree that advertising is being done in other states, such as NC where I live and where cars will not be available for at least one year and likely two or more, I think it will only produce frustration, and then people will tune out Nissan info. :)

In regard to dates for advertising vs delivery, maybe statik can tell us sometime soon what he currently thinks Leaf delivery dates will be, East, West, North (Canada) and South. :)

It seems there have been various adjustments to the original plan.

The EV boys up North (Canada) aren’t getting theirs until late 2011. One year after US rollout. Checked with Nissan Canada a while back and that was their response, unless otherwise changed.

Static, any update that you know of?
