Nissan Records 16,300 Reservations for the LEAF; Plans 25,000 for the Entire Process

32

While speaking to a Nissan representative recently, a update on the ‘state of the reservation’ process was given. To date, Nissan has booked 16,300 handraisers.

And while that number has certainly slowed from the initial rush of eager future EV owners (Nissan had 9,500 in mid May, and 14,000 just 30 days ago), the number has started to rise quickly again of late, as Nissan brings more focus to their 100 mile EV as we draw closer to its December release.

Nissan said they have plans to hold open the reservation process until 25,000 people have signed up, and they asked us to “encourage folks to keep reserving their LEAF at nissanusa.com,” while stressing, “We are not sold out!”

So if you have not done so…get on it!

How many will be delivered in December and where will they be going? Is San Diego going to get the first 1000 that go to California?

BTW, a quick prediction: I think GM will make an attempt to match the cost of the LEAF with the Volt.

Then the number of cars they sell in 2012 will have to be cut back from 30000 to 25000 in order to hold their total losses constant.

FYI my Aero charger home assessment guy said their were a total of 4 companies in Arizona doing home assessments (2 in Phx and 2 in Tucson). He also said that his company had only done 5 assessments.

A nice video of the leaf showing it from angles other than straight into the fish mouth. (I have no idea why they always use that shot)

PS if I get one I may black out the front bonnet area. Saw a picture of that paint scheme once and it looked pretty good.

Not sure if you are joking or not, but in case not, the part about GM losing money on the Volt seems to be simply spin on gm’s part to justify a higher price. First, accounting-wise, it is the whole corporation that makes or loses money, not individual car lines. But second, insofar as one guesses at expenses, the Volt costs gm about the same as the Cruze, plus the battery. That’s probably low to mid 20s. So gm will sell the Volt for a significant margin above the cost of manufacture. The margin is no doubt lower than on a Silverado truck, or on an Escalade, and the margin may not be enough to cover the Volt’s proportional share of overhead, but gm is still selling Volts with a significant margin.

One wonders how to compare the 16,300 to the number of “reservations” for Volt. I doubt that there is anyone who even knows how many Volt deposits have been received by dealers, and then those will be for the winner states only, so I guess there’s no national number at all. One wonders why gm keeps doing a plan that keeps themselves in the dark.

They use that shot to make the LEAF look bad.

Me thinks the Lance ad running during the Tour De France probably accounts for the recent upswing in reservations, a good ad that is hitting a small but affluent and receptive audience.

Statik, I am eagerly looking forward to your updates the next couple of days! I’m in Minnesota and right now hopeful for mid to late summer next year, but am ready to accept late 2011, early 2012.

    More colors would be nice.

Yes, now that GM has announced that CT is one of the near first wave locations, I would like to know when we can expect our Leafs here. If GM would take a refundable deposit, I would put one done on a Volt and hedge my chance of getting something with a plug next year. (Local Chevy dealers that are taking deposits are saying they are non-refundable) I like the Leaf better since I have a multiple car household to rely on when we need to go on a lengthy trip, so needing the range extender is not that important to me. Unless the Volt is priced aggressively.

I think GM will price the Volt aggressively, while the dealers will knock the price way out of the ball park.

And I definitely wouldn’t trust my non-refundable deposit to anyone at this point.

garrytman – we are also a 3 car home so we will be using the LEAF as a commuter vehical. I highly doubt the Volt will be priced near the LEAF and then there is availability of only 10,000 Volts in 2011.

Does anyone know if the 25K built is allocated world wide or just the US? If world wide, then I guess I won’t get mine for a while, maybe mid next year?

Were 3 car’s as well. I’m going to trad in our commuter car for the LEAF. Looking forward to no GAS commutes. Our carpool commute is 18 miles one way.

Thanks for pointing that out Stan. I got that myself today…I believe everyone with a reservation got one at some point today…provided you had a valid email address of course, (=
    .
Nothing really to report on it yet, but looks like their might be some thing of interest in the future. For anyone who didn’t get it, Nissan explains the function of ‘the panel’ as:

“We will be requesting feedback via short online surveys, or invitations to focus groups and/or interviews, on approximately a once-per-month basis. We will share with you what we learn from all Panel members, so you can learn with us.”

Yes, I received the e-mail from Nissan as well. I elected to be a panelist and watched the videos. Then I noticed the link on the bottom that read “congratulations on being part of automotive history
thanks for reserving a Nissan LEAF™. you can now use the reservation confirmation number below to update any current information on your vehicle. “

I clicked on the link and logged in. It opened to my reservation page and at the very bottom in small print it read “you’re approved for the free home charger. Yahoo I yelled…clicked for details and it said the charger will be installed approximately one month before delivery of your Nissan LEAF. Today is a good day…yes indeed.

  29. On 5.22.2010 I signed up for a reservation for one of your new leaf electric cars. I understood that if at any time I wished to cancel, you would do so and return my $99 fee.
I am hereby canceling this order #SACFFBE 3.
Please confirm this cancellation and return my $99 credit for this transaction. I already have a Maxima, and have decided to keep it.

Customers in your state [Maryland] will not be able to order until late summer 2011. In the meantime, we are working hard with our partners to further develop the charging infrastructure in your area so your entire ownership experience is of the highest quality.
